Kauri Museum: Situated at Matakohe 45 km South of Dargaville. Discover the story of the magnificent Kauri tree, its timber and it's gum, in the context of pioneering in New Zealand.
Dargaville Museum:Situated in Dargaville. Open daily 9 am to 4pm, except for Christmas Day. See the Rainbow Warrior masts, Maori and Pioneer exhibits, Shipwreck display, ancient Maori Pa site, largest piece of Kauri Gum in the world. Panoramic views of surrounding district and Northern Wairoa River.
Attractions, Parks and Reserves
Waipoua Forest:The Waipoua Forest is home to the mighty Kauri. The best remnant of Kauri Forest preserved as a reserve. The three largest Kauri trees left in New Zealand can be found here.
Trounson Kauri Park: Delightful Kauri reserve with well defined and easy walking track.
Kai Iwi Lakes: Situated 35km north-west of Dargaville. The Lakes are great for all water activities including swimming, water skiing, windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, and Trout Fishing. A wonderful safe family holiday spot which is great for picnics.
Ripiro Ocean Beach: New Zealand's longest driveable beach. It can be accessed from Baylys Beach, Glinks Gully, Pouto, Omamari and Maunganui Bluff. It is advisable to use 4WD if driving on the beach.
Northern Wairoa River: New Zealand's longest navigable river - great fishing.
Historic Moreton Bay Fig: One of New Zealand's ten most noteable trees - situated at Pahi, 6 km from Paparoa.
Coates Memorial Church: Opposite the Kauri Museum at Matakohe.
Tokatoka Peak: Situated 17km South of Dargaville. Your chance to climb a rare volcanic phenomenon - the plug or core of a volcano. A 20 minute climb to expansive views of the whole district.
Maungaraho Rock: A huge rocky outcrop rising from the countryside. Situated 11km South of Dargaville - 45 minute walk around base - 30 minutes to summit.
Pouto Lighthouse: (Kaipara Head) 69 km South of Dargaville on Pouto Peninsula at the entrance to the Kaipara Harbour.
Harding Park - Dargaville: Scenic views over Dargaville and of the Norther Wairoa River Very good picnic area.
Maunganui Bluff: 40 km North of Dargaville, at the end of Aranga Coast Road. Three hours return walk to the summit. The Bluff rises 460 metres from the sea below and comprises a 495 hectare scenic reserve providing breathtaking scenery.
