Sited on
the right between Ohaeawai and Ngawha Springs turnoff on State highway 1, St
Michael’s Church is indicated by a Historic Places sign.
The
district was the scene of fighting during the New Zealand Land Wars and some
battle sites can be seen nearby.
St
Michael’s Church was built on the pa site where the Battle of Ohaeawai was
fought.
Fallen
English solders are buried in the grounds and the story of the battles is
written on the walls of the historic Church.
