Northland Coastguard Air Patrol was formed by members of the Bay Of Islands Aero Club. but is now an independent Inc. Soc'y. and is one of the 22 Coastguard Units that make up Coastguard New Zealand's Northern Region, being the only other Air Patrol north of Auckland, with an area of responsibility that stretches coast to coast from South of Whangarei to Cape Reinga.
NorthCAP own their own Cessna 182 aircraft, which is manned by a crew of four- a pilot, a search coordinator and two observers. NorthCAP relies on the generous time commitments of its volunteer members as the Coastguard service is only partially finded by the N.Z.Govt.
NorthCAP also relies on support from community funding schemes and public donation in various forms.
