MISSION
The
Cancer Society  is committed to reducing the number of people who develop or die from cancer and ensure the best quality of life for people with cancer.

FUNDING
The Cancer Society is a non government funded organisation, funded by the community through donations, bequests in a Will, In Memoriam donations, community fundraising, Cancer Society merchandise, membership and community events such as Daffodil Day.  Visit the Cancer Shop  and the Auckland Cancer Society  for further information.

SUPPORT AND INFORMATION
The Cancer Society offers services to the people of Northland who are coping with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer in their families.  Services are provided free thanks to the generosity of community donations and fundraising.

Northland Cancer Society Liaison Nurses
Nurses who are qualified and experienced in cancer care provide support and information to newly diagnosed people and their families.  These nurses are community based and visit people in their homes.  Referral is by contacting Daffodil House on 09 437 5593.

Counselling
Referral can be made to professional counselling services for those people who are finding adjustment to diagnosis and life changes particularly stressful.

Massage Therapy
Massage enhances physical and emotional well being and ones ability to manage symptoms associated with cancer and its treatment.  Referral to a therapist can be made in cases of special need.  Referrals to counselling and massage is by contacting Daffodil House on 09 437 5593.

Courses
Living with Cancer educational programmes available to people with a new diagnosis and their support person.  This series covers topics that assist the person to understand their condition and enables them to ask questions of guest speakers to clarify personal issues.

Look Good Feel Better workshops are run three times a year.  These workshops are for women undergoing radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment for cancer.  They provide information on skincare, applying cosmetics, haircare including wigs and other headgear.  The courses are funded by cosmetic companies and supported by the Cancer Society.

Support Groups
These are available throughout Northland for people with cancer and their support person and enables them to socialise and meet people who have 'been there'.  Support is provided by sharing experiences and practical solutions to issues.  A Liaison Nurse is present at these meetings.

Whangarei Support Group
This group meets at Daffodil House, 73 Kamo Road, on the 3rd Wednesday of each month between 10am and noon.

Dargaville Support Group
This group meets at the Community Services Wing, Dargaville Hospital, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month between 10am and noon.

Kerikeri Support Group
This group meets at Kingston House, Hone Heke Road, on the 1st Friday of the month between 10am and noon.

Kaikohe Support Group
This group meets at the Senior Citizen's Hall, Tawanui Road, on the 4th Friday of the month between 10am and noon.

Far North Support Group
These groups meet in Kaitaia on the 1st Tuesday and in Coopers Beach on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month between 10am and noon.

Breast Cancer Support Groups also meet monthly throughout Northland.

Volunteer Services
Volunteers support the Liaison Nurse by providing assistance when needed in the areas of driving, small meals, shopping, and visits and clerical assistance to staff.  The Cancer Society relies heavily on the valuable input of volunteers on Daffodil Day.

Subsidised
accommodation is available to patients travelling to Whangarei and Auckland for cancer related care.

Health Promotion

The Northland Cancer Society actively supports activities aimed at reducing the risk of cancer. 

This is done by:

  •       Providing well researched cancer information and statistics to schools and other organisations for student projects and teacher information.
  •       Providing pamphlets and posters in the three key areas of Smokefree, Sunsmart and Healthy Diet and Exercise for use in any community setting.
  •       Facilitating workshops or presentations on the key areas of Smokefree, Sunsmart and Healthy Diet and Exercise.
  •       Providing shade umbrellas for school and community outdoor activities.
