2006 Report

Paihia's "Vision Matariki"Art Exhibition drew an estimated 1,000 plus admirers to the Copthorne Hotel and Resort Bay of Islands over Queen's Birthday Weekend, several hundred turning out on Friday night alone for the gala opening by Mayor Yvonne Sharp.

Mayor Yvonne Sharp opens the exhibition Opua Primary School pupils give a rousing performance

The kapa haka group from Opua Primary School staged an impressive performance while the champagne flowed and guests revelled in the display, including fresh and original artwork by talented local school students.

Visitors appreciated the fact that many of the artists were present throughout the weekend to talk about their work.

A constant stream of locals and visitors from further afield were drawn to the exhibition and many commented on the outstanding quality of the art and the fact that there was something for everybody with many cultures represented.  The exhibition offered an exciting range of artworks from painting and pastels to photography, weaving and mosaics to concrete sculpture.

Other treats on offer were a very informative presentation on the subect of traditional Maori kites from Harko Brown with kite waiata by Verbena Kopa and a two day kete weaving workshop by Bronnie Harford.
