Two Storey (circa 1920) Homestead

Architect: Arthur J. Palmer A.N.Z.I.A
The homestead was built in 1920-1922 by Henry & Hannah Ludbrook,(Sam’s grandparents) who lived there with their six sons.

Cecil & Margaret Ludbrook 1928

Hereward Ludbrook, their second son, was killed weeks before the end of WW1.

Henry & Hannah lived in their new home until 1928, when they retired to live at Paihia.

In 1928, Cecil Ludbrook married Margaret Giesen, moving into the new house to raise their four daughters and one son (Sam). In 1960 they also retired to Paihia.

Sam and Chris Ludbrook were married in 1963.

The feature of Ludbrook House is the entrance hall with rich native rimu paneling, polished matai floors and the handsome staircase leading to the upstairs bedrooms.

Upstairs the bedrooms are each decorated in soft pastels and flooded with light. Comfortable beds, antiques and displays of contemporary New Zealand art works complement this family home.

The family room and kauri paneled dining room opens onto an outside brick terrace where the view extends across the paddocks to the farm and animals.

Outside the house the large and rambling garden beckons. Explore the ongoing landscaping work that Chris is addicted to and stroll to the fig and citrus orchards where you are bound to find fruit to pick and eat.

"The house and Chris & Sam are an inspiration and delight. A home where the magic and the magical are a daily experience."
